A man convicted twice of a 1994 deadly crime spree plans to appeal his punishment.

Last month, Ted Oswald, pleaded no contest to the crimes during his retrial, and a jury decided he wasn't legally insane when he and his father committed the crime spree. A judge sentenced Ted Oswald to two life terms in prison plus 555 years.

The retrial came after the state Supreme Court threw out his 1995 conviction because of juror bias.

Oswald's attorney, Jeffrey Jensen, says he filed the notice of intent to appeal last week. That's the first step in appealing the conviction.

Jensen says he plans to turn over the case to the state public defender's office, which will appoint a lawyer if Oswald wants one.

But Jensen says he expected Oswald to represent himself.
