You'll soon have to show i–d, if you're buying cold medicines or other products that can be used to produce the illegal drug methamphetamine.

Calling meth a serious threat to wisconsin communities and young people, governor doyle today signed into law a bill designed to cut down on meth production.

Not only will consumers have to show i–d when buying products containing ingredients used to make meth,

Pharmacists will have to place anything containing pseudoephedrine—a key ingredient in meth—behind the counter.

And there are now limits on the amount of pseudoephedrine you can buy each month.

"This bill won't get in the way of a family who has a legitimate need for cold medicine," says Governor Doyle. "But it will cause serious problems for the meth cooks who need up to 1,000 pills who need a single ounce of meth."

The new law also brings Wisconsin’s meth crime laws inline with neighboring states.

Doyle says since the state of Oklahoma enacted similar legislation last year, seizures of meth labs dropped 90%.
