Taking Another Shot at Concealed Carry

The push to allow Wisconsin residents to carry concealed weapons is coming back to the state capitol.

Senator Dave Zien of Eau Claire says he'll reintroduce the bill by next month.

A version vetoed by Governor Doyle last year required sheriff's departments to do background checks of applicants. The new bill would give the responsibility to another group, such as the state Department of Justice, the union representing state troopers or private security firms. Zien says they sheriffs won't have to worry about it, "they were the most vehemently against it at the last session, a number of sheriffs around the state, not all of them, but they won't have to worry about the process anymore."

Last year's version fell short by just one vote of the two thirds needed in the state Assembly to override Gov. Doyle'
