Health Care Options

A new set of health care changes could save local governments millions of dollars in the future.

A state representative announced she will introduce 5 new bills that will give cities, counties and school boards more flexibility when dealing with health insurance.

Health insurance costs have been rising by as much as 20–percent in recent years and experts say the cost of health care will be more than your annual pay in just a decade.

The bills will allow local governments to offer their employees the cheaper state health insurance plan without negotiating.

"Every time you ask for something at the bargaining table, you have to give up something else," says Dan Thompson of the League of Municipalities. "You have to pay a little more salary, offer more holidays, this simply takes that matter off the table."

The bills would also offer employees insurance plans with multiple cost levels, allowing workers to pick the plan they can best afford.

The bill has the support of many groups that represent local government and the school boards.
