There's a new scam floating around the Madison area, and we want to warn you about it in this Crime Tracker report.
People trying to sell their cars in the newspaper are being targeted by scam artists. Here's how it works. Someone is calling the seller, and offering to buy the car as long as they can pay with a credit card.
The "buyer" even reads off a fake credit card number, and says they'll have their bank call the seller. That's when the second person calls, to tell the seller the credit card is legitimate.
Banks say they would never make that kind of transaction over the phone and neither should you.
There have been at least two people targeted so far, fortunately, the scam hasn't worked.
If you get a call like this, don't make the deal, but do make the call to Madison Police at 266-4275.
