Assembly Passes Voter I.D.

Another day, another Republican try at making Wisconsinites show photo I-Ds at the polls.

The state Assembly passed the measure this afternoon. The Senate
already has approved the measure. It now goes to Governor Doyle,
who must sign it before it can become law.

Doyle is a Democrat. He has vetoed similar Republican voter I-D
measures twice before.

The governor has said it would strip law-abiding citizens who
lack I-Ds of their constitutional right to vote.

Republicans have countered the measure would provide free state
I-Ds for people who can't afford them.

They insist photo identification would fix what they call a
broken electoral system, which currently requires no proof of names
and addresses even when voters register on Election Day.
