Nearly 1,000 people took advantage of a special deal to get a brand new gas cans as they simultaneously helped to keep our air cleaner.
The Dane County Clean Air Coalition has 3,500 brand new environmentally friendly gas cans to give to those who are willing to turn in their old metal or plastic cans. The new cans are spill proof and prevent gas vapors from escaping into the air.
Officials estimate there are 167,000 gas cans in Dane County, adding they emit more than one ton of pollutants into the air. Many people don't realize the level of inefficiency contained in their old cans.
Dave Merritt from the Clean Air Coaltion says, "when you're pouring harmful gas vapors escape into the environment called volatile organic compounds. That's the pollutant, when mixed with other pollutants causes ozone."
If you missed out, you can still exchange your old gas cans at the Clean Sweep location which is at the north end of the Dane County Highway Complex on Fish Hatchery Drive. There is a limit of two per family.
