Former Lawmaker Appointed to Board of Regents

Governor Jim Doyle appointed a former ambassador to Norway and Wisconsin lawmaker to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents Monday.

Thomas Loftus replaces Toby Marcovich, who resigned last week at
the end of his term.

Loftus, a Democrat, served in the Wisconsin Legislature from 1977 to 1989, including a stint as Assembly speaker. He lost a race for governor to the Republican incumbent, Tommy Thompson, in 1990.

Former President Clinton chose Loftus to serve as the US ambassador to Norway in 1993. He left that post in 1997. He has been special adviser to the director general of the World Health Organization since 1998.

The 60-year-old Loftus begins his term as a regent July first. It runs until the year 2011.

The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Republican-controlled state Senate, but he can serve as a regent before the Senate votes on it.
