Wisconsin's "Failing" Schools

Three-quarters of the schools on Wisconsin's failing schools list released today are in Milwaukee -- the state's largest district.

Two Madison schools on the list are LaFollette and East High Schools.

The state Department of Public Instruction put 45 schools and
the Menominee Indian School District on the list for failing to
make annual yearly progress on test scores and other measures as
required under the No Child Left Behind Act.

The state measures schools based on test results, including how
many students score as proficient in reading and math, graduation
rates and attendance, among other things.

The federal law mandates that all children be proficient in
reading and math by 2014, and make annual yearly progress toward
that goal.

This list is considered preliminary. Schools have until June 30th to appeal their status.
