Dane County now has its own traffic enforcement team. The Sheriff's Department hopes the team will make drivers more likely to obey the law.
Three veteran officers make up the new traffic team, which is specifically assigned to enforce traffic on county roads.
The team was created in response to residential needs, and to reduce the record–setting rate of fatalities in Dane County last year.
"This year we currently have approximately sixteen deaths, we're lagging a little bit behind last year, but that's still an unacceptable number," says Sheriff Gary Hamblin.
The Sheriff says he also understands the new team cannot possibly reduce fatalities on its own. That's why authorities remind all drivers to drive sober, maintain a moderate speed, pay attention, and always wear seatbelts.
