Madison: It only took a few hours for undercover Madison police officers to bust six women for prostitution Sunday night.

The women range in age from 22 to 54, and they were busted in the Allied Drive and Badger Road neighborhoods.

Madison Police Officer Jen Krueger described how easy it was for the officers to pick them up. "The (hookers) were walking the streets on the sidewalks. Sometimes they flag down cars themselves. There's no money involved. The women do get in the car. A signal is given and they're arrested right away."

Now that they've been arrested, the women can expect a call from Jan Miyasaki. "I'll try to contact them."

Jan is the program director at Respect, a city funded organization dedicated to helping rehabilitate prostitutes. "We help women who have histories of prostitution who want to change their lives and their lifestyle."

Jan says many prostitutes have a history of domestic abuse and assault, and Respect can give them some self respect. "Mental health treatment, housing, lawful source of income, alcohol and other substance abuse treatment."

The substance abuse treatment may be the most important. Two of the women were picked up with drug paraphernalia.

"There are more women out there because of substance abuse and poverty," says Miyasaki.

"Unfortunately with prostitution many of them do it for drugs or for money for drugs. It's a lot of bad behaviors all rolled into one," says Off. Krueger.

Officer Krueger says the sting worked so well, they'll do it again later this year.
