A physicians group plans to sue the dairy industry and several food companies Tuesday.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine claims ads suggesting dairy consumption can help people lose weight are false and deceptive.
In a class action filing obtained by The Associated Press, the group takes aim at industry-funded TV and print ads that claim consuming 24 ounces of fat-free or low-fat dairy can help the body burn fat.
The physicians committee advocates a vegan diet.
The group claims most scientific evidence shows people will either gain pounds or remain the same weight when increasing dairy consumption.
It's asking a district court in Virginia to issue an injunction banning the ads.
One of the defendants in the case is the International Dairy Foods Association. A spokeswoman, Susan Ruland, says many studies back up the industry's position.
