Airport Emergency Drill

Police, fire and rescue crews rush to the Dane County Regional Airport this morning. Their mission, to find out how they would react if someone took control of an airplane filled with hostages.

It was just a test today when an airplane was hijacked at the Dane County Airport.

By participating in this full–scale emergency test the Madison Fire Department, along with 40 local organizations tested their emergency response when disaster strikes.

Those emergency crews saw it provides a great learning experience for each agency to work together as a community and practice their roles in a real–life emergency scenario.

"It gives them an opportunity to test their skills in this area ... in a real life scenario," says Public Information Officer Elise Schaffer of the Dane County Sheriff's Department. " We can do training after training, but we often don't get a chance to work all together which is the great opportunity here."

Federal regulations require certified airports to conduct a full–scale emergency exercise every three years ... while completing an overview of the Airport's Emergency Procedures each year
