The future of the 440th Airlift Wing at Milwaukee County's airport is front and center today, as a commissioner from Base Realignment and Closure stops by.
The visit follows last month's BRAC report news that the 440th should be closed and operations moved to a base in North Carolina.
Gov. Doyle and base leaders met with Commissioner Samuel Skinner this morning. After the meeting Doyle said he was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with the commissioner.
He went on to say "This facility has had tremendous success in achieving its recruitment goals, and because it shares facilities and resources with Mitchell Airport, it is an extremely cost-effective facility".
A report on the base will be forwarded to President Bush, who will make a final decision on all base closings by the end of the year.
