Usually found in the less populated areas of northern Wisconsin, black bears are now spotted more frequently in the southern two-thirds of the state.
Whether they're pawing at bee hives in Columbia County or
lapping at bird feeders in Richland County, black bears are more at
home in the southern two-thirds of the state.
That's prompted the Department of Natural Resources to take bear
education further south. The agency's top tip? Leave them alone.
D-N-R biologist Bill Ishamael in Spring Green says the black
bear is normally very timid and will avoid contact with people.
The state estimates there are about eleven-thousand bears in
Wisconsin, with about 18-hundred in the southern two-thirds of the
state.
Earlier this spring, D-N-R wardens had to tranquilize a black
bear not far from Mayfair Mall in suburban Milwaukee.
