People who live in the town of La Prairie in Rock County say it's no place for a new weigh station for trucks.
Portions of farmland along Interstate 90 south of Janesville could soon be part of the DOT's new $7.5 million weigh station.
The state says the site is close to the border and offers plenty of space. Friday the Department of Transportation is meeting with people who live in the area, but town board member John Lader says most people oppose the project.
"The town of La Prairie is against this because it takes good active farmland out of production when other sites are available."
The family who currently owns the proposed site agreed. They told us that the weigh station could interfere with crop work and irrigation. The DOT says the state has not yet purchased the land.
Construction is expected to begin in about a year.
