High Speed Chase and Shooting

The officer who was injured in Monday’s high-speed chase and shooting through areas of Dane County is at home recovering tonight.

The high-speed chase started with the report of a stolen vehicle in the town of Dunn and ended with a confrontation with Dane County Sheriff's Department, State Patrol, Oregon Police Department, and McFarland Police Department.

Officials were able to force the driver off the road but the car spun around and charged at an Oregon Police Department squad car with two officers and then it ran over a state trooper's foot. That's when officials started firing at the suspect.

Dane County Sheriff Gary Hamblin says it’s his understanding that all of the windows were up on the suspect vehicle, making clear communication with the driver difficult.

43-year-old Kevin Stenjem of Madison was taken to University Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries after the incident. He has been arrested on tentative charges of operating a vehicle without consent, alluding officers, and reckless endangerment.

Sergeant John Krueger of the State Patrol suffered hip, shoulder, foot and ankle injuries.
