The special fire-retarding substance applied to Watertown's massive tire fire has worked so well fire fighters now hope to have the blaze extinguished by the end of the weekend.
The substance arrived Thursday, after it was trucked in from Georgia. Authorities say it has been effective in reducing smoke, in addition to quashing those flames. This has allowed for the use of large equipment to help break-up the pile of tires, which has been burning since Tuesday.
The successful application means the fire could be extinguished sooner than the 14 to 20 days which had been estimated earlier this week.
