A settlement with a drug company brings some statewide cancer groups a little extra funding.
Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager presented almost $90,000 in checks to 7 different groups that help cancer survivors and their families.
The money came from a settlement with the drug company Bristol–Myers Squibb. The anti–trust lawsuit filed by all 50 states says the drug company eliminated generic competitors for its cancer drug Taxol, allowing the company to keep their prices artificially high.
Most of the $62 million lawsuit went to victims, but each state received some money to hand out in any way they want.
“We are doing so in a way where we try to look at the issue comprehensively and not just target a single area but look at what patients and their families needs are from start to finish,” says Lautenschlager
The payouts to the groups ranged from $5,000 all the way to $28,000.
