State Gets Grant to Speed up DNA Testing

The state crime lab is going to be getting some advice on how to make sure they are processing DNA advice as efficiently as possible.

The crime lab is sharing in a federal grant that will give them $150,000 to hire an outside consultant to inspect how they do business.
The demand for DNA processing at the state crime lab has increased by 160% in the last decade, and they have a current backlog of 946 cases.

The grant will hopefully show them if there are any ways to streamline the process, either through new technology or better processing.

“It ensures us that indeed the process that takes place here and the kinds of procedures that are used from the time the evidence gets here to the time it leaves are done in a way that gives us the best bang for our buck and is done most efficiently,” Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager told reporters Thursday.

Another part of the federal grant will go toward retraining police officers to better collect DNA evidence at the crime scenes.
