Wisconsin officials are standing up for consumers and taking steps to fight price gouging at the gas pump.
State Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager is joining efforts with other Midwestern states to find out what's behind skyrocketing gas prices in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Lautenschalger says she's also working with Democratic lawmakers on a law that would prohibit gas price gouging.
In Wisconsin the average price for a gallon of regular is $2.78, but some of the highest numbers are seen in southern states, where prices are just under $6.00 a gallon.
Governor Doyle says he hopes the federal government does their part to control gas prices because, he says, this is really a national issue.
