**RELEASE FROM MADISON FIRE DEPARTMENT**

An early morning fire caused an estimated $175,000 in damage to a home at 6521 Appleglen Lane on Madison’s southwest side. Nobody was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

A representative of Alliant Energy was responding to a power outage in the neighborhood when he saw the fire and requested the fire department. City of Madison firefighters were sent to the scene at 1:27 AM. When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from the home and began their fire attack.

Firefighters entering the home noticed that flames had burned through part of the floor, making it unsafe to continue operating there. They backed up and proceeded to a lower level below the damaged floor where they could safely attack the fire.

Other crews searched the home and confirmed that there were no occupants inside. The fire was declared under control at 1:53 AM.
The home suffered fire and smoke damage. Fire investigators are searching for the cause of the fire.

Remember:
• Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and in each sleeping area. Interconnected smoke alarms are recommended and will make sure the alarm is heard throughout the home.
• Working smoke alarms save lives. Test smoke alarms every month.
• Have a home escape plan and practice it twice a year.
• When the alarm sounds, get out and stay out.
• After you have escaped, call 9-1-1 from a safe place.
• If you are building a new home or remodeling, consider home fire sprinklers. They protect your home, your life and firefighters’ lives.
