Information obtained during a routine traffic stop led police Thursday to discover three stolen big screen televisions worth upwards of $7,000.

Police now have at least 12 suspects they believe committed numerous commercial burglaries in Madison.

In the fall of last year, police started to see a notable increase in the number of non-residential burglaries in Madison. In January and February of this year there were a total of 217 in Madison alone, which is about triple the amount from 2007.

A Burglary Task Force was created in February and by April the number of burglaries fell to 66. The task force allows different departments around the county to more easily work together and share information.

Even though police believe a majority of these burglaries are committed by a small group of people, they did not say it was gang related.

Said Captain Tom Snyder with the Madison Police, "It is very common for us to see a very small number of people responsible for a large number of burglaries. This is clearly the case. When we say there were 100 burglaries last month we do not mean that there are 100 people who committed a crime. We are talking about a much smaller group of people responsible for these crimes."

Even though the number of commercial burglaries are now down police remind business owners to take action to protect themselves.

They recommend that you have sufficient outdoor lighting, keep landscaping low so people can't hide behind it, and install fencing if possible.

To anonymous...so the police are not solving things in a timely manner according to you. Yes, there are some "stranger" homicides that are being actively worked day and night, but then you fail to realize the West Washington shooting was quickly solved as well as the Bohanon suspect who fled to Chicago. And the police have solved the robberies on E Washington and now many of these burglaries. I would like to see the job you would do...that is, if you even have one.

THE SUSPECTS are probably in Chicago by now if they are not in our jail!Im glad they at least have suspects but that doesnt mean anything especially if it is gang related.

So this has been going on for a long time and nobody knew about it. This supports the case that is currently AGAINST the MADISON POLICE DEPT. AND CITY ADMINISTRATION. The case is for NON DISCLOSURE of Public Records. The police are not solving crimes in a timely manner. LET'S FACE IT. But the problem is, they are not telling the public what is going on either. They are not protecting us and not allowing us to protect ourselves either. People would act differently if they knew that there was a crime spree going on. But I am sure that the MPD comment would be, "The public is safe. This is an isolated incident." Well MPD - Who do you think the public is? The public OWN THE BUSINESSES!! YOU MORONS!

No the police have built a case but because the Dane County DA is so under staffed it will get plead down to nothing as these losers will be back out on the street. We cannot just rely on the police, it needs to be the whole system. More cops = more DAs. Its time to put our money where our mouth is.

it reads suspects... not charged thus not solved.

You see people? You always accuse the police of not wrapping up every case in minutes. Things take time, but most of the crimes get solved.
