Press release from Charter Communications:

MADISON, WISCONSIN – Charter Communications has been able to restore Internet service to Wisconsin customers by re-routing its data traffic to new fiber optic lines, a Charter company spokesperson stated this afternoon.

“Total repairs and full service restoration is not expected until later this evening,” stated Jessie Hlad, Charter’s Wisconsin Communications Manager.

“Until complete repairs are finalized, some customers may experience slower Internet speeds, but no one is completely off-line as a result of the fiber damage any longer,” Hlad stated. The damaged fiber lines have affected service and speeds throughout areas of Wisconsin, northern Illinois and southeastern Minnesota.

The outage originated with a third-party network provider who sustained damage to their network and began around 8AM today. Repairs are continuing with complete restoration estimated by 8pm this evening. Video and telephone services provided by Charter were not affected by this outage.

A total number of Internet customers affected by the outage is not fully known at this time.

MADISON -- A crew digging in a construction site in the Chicago area cut a fiber line this morning, causing major Internet service delays for subscribers of TDS and Charter Communications, among others. The line was cut before 8 a.m. this morning.

Affected areas included parts of Wisconsin, northern Illinois and southeastern Minnesota. According to a press release from Charter, customers may experience slow speeds, intermittent access problems or be without Internet access altogether.

Repairs are underway to reestablish Internet service for all those impacted. No estimate for complete restoration of service is available at this time. No video or telephone services provided by Charter are affected by the outage.

Funny that everyone is upset with TDS and Charter yet nobody called the construction crew idiots. Like Jason said,"Diggers Hotline, anyone?" It could have been a gas line! Okay, I'll say it...IDIOTS!!

Charter is the worst company to deal with. They told me there was an outage in my area for over a week, and it would be resolved in 4-6 hours everytime I called. When you call them the prompts tell you about outages in your area. It was not mentioned and I brought that up and they didn't care. Finally I demanded a tech come out and he said it had been disconnected. I asked by whom, and he said they did it. I always pay my bill on time. It was disconnected because there was not a tag on the box indicating I was a paying customer so during a random audit they found that and disconnected it. It could have all been avoided if they would have verified I was a customer. But know they are too stupid. They prorated my bill for the week I was out. I could not get a manager on the phone. Just some incompetent moron who claimed to be a supervisor. She said to me, I see your cable is working. I asked her if she even heard a word I said. They are soo stupid. I am no longer a customer! boycot charter

Yet another fiber cut occurred today in Janesville on HWY 51 just south of HWY 11 - it also affected Charter business / residential customers. Digger's Hotline, anyone? Seriously.

I wonder if that's what happened to Charter's On Demand. It's been out for almost a week and they just say there is a problem but they are working on but have no idea when it's going to be solved.

And just so everyone knows, I work at TDS and this is not a TDS error. A construction crew did this down in Chicago. Could've happened to any phone or internet provider.
