Do you have renters insurance?
Yes
No

14-apartment units suffered damage in Friday evening's fire at Fitchburg Springs on Leopold Way. Just one tenant, out of those 14, had renters insurance.

Renters insurance is one of the least expensive insurance options out there, as low as $100 a year in some cases. Agents say money well spent for the added peace of mind.

"It's just a blessing it didn't destroy my family's things," says Derrick Prather.

Derrick's apartment was spared by the fire. However, had the flames spread to his home, anything destroyed would have been his responsibility to replace. Derrick does not have renters insurance.

"We just moved in," he says. "Not even thinking about taking that extra precaution like that."

"Everyone who is renting an apartment should have renters insurance," says David Scher, an agent with American Family Insurance.

"The perception, for tenants, is that the landlords take care of everything," says Scher.

But, that's not the case.

Scher says your personal belongings are your responsibility to protect from fire, wind, vandalism and the like.

"To replace everything that you have, from your socks to your kitchen appliances, is very expensive when you think about it," he says.

Scher says go room to room and add up the value of your possessions. He says $16,000 to $20,000 in coverage will cost you around $10 to $15 a month.

"When you compare that to the value of coverage, it really is a no brainier," adds Scher.

"It's opened our eyes and I heard renters insurance isn't that expensive, so we're definitely going to get it now," says Derrick.

Renters Insurance not only covers your belongings, it also covers temporary living expenses if you are displaced and includes liability protection.

Most insurance companies offer a discount if you add renters insurance to an existing auto policy.

Sandy at 2:01, I think you can get it cheaper than that. I think 40k worth of coverage is a little too much for your needs, you can probably get by with $10-$20000 of coverage you might want to check into that, also if you have Auto Ins you might check with your agent about getting it thru him/her. It can really cut your Auto Ins down having multiline insurance thru the same agent

My renters insurance is about $14.50 a month for $40,000 coverage. I would never consider not having it! My apt building has many fireplaces and gas lines and if anything were to ever happen to cause an explosion or something, I would be so thankful that I found the money every year to pay my premium! I can be the most responsible person in the world but that doesn't mean my neighbors are!

Hey Anonymous at 1:10, All insurance is a gamble, its no guarantee anything will or will not happen, and as i said before i lose employment so had to chose and its more important for me to keep Auto Insurance Vs Renters. I know at this point in time i cant afford Renters Ins

Hey anon at 9:34. just think if the person who can't afford the 8-10.00 per month didn't get it, and they lost everything. But they are able to post their comment. I"d really begin to wonder which is more important.

If you rent you should have renter ins and it should be required as should car insurance in Wisconsin you live with others in a apartment and it would be to protect everyone in the building ....it would make all people safer and responsible in your car and home Wake Up Wisconsin insurance is necessary to make all insurance costs the liability of the owner

M from Madison i would check your policy about the flood issue, I am guessing your policy DOESNT cover floods just like homeowners unless you buy it seperate

Flood is not covered by renters or homeowners insurance, you have to have a seperate flood insurance policy. Renters insurance is very cheap, I work for an insurance office and it't typically $8-10 a month. I can't believe how many people dont have it.

Should Have,Could Have,Would Have... as i said not everyone can afford it me as one of those, I had to chose between auto insurance and renters ins because i lost my employment and i hate to say it but Auto won that one, alot more can happen on the road

It's insane NOT to have renter's insurance! It's typically cheap, around $12 a month, that's the cost of a fast food meal or two. You just can't afford not to have it. If there is a fire, flood, theft, etc... and all your stuff is gone, replacing everything will cost a lot more than $12.

I didn't have renters insurance until there was a fire in the building I used to live in. Thankfully the damage was contained to the apartment where the fire occurred, but it was still enough of a wake up call for me. I got a policy the next day and I've had it ever since. In fact, I wouldn't even think about not having it.

I always carry renters insurance after learning that landlords can hold security deposits for faulty plumbing and flooding and get away with it, Renters insurance covers more than you think I have an umbrella plan.

Insurance is a good idea HOWEVER with the costs of rent in the greater madison area and the cost of living and low paying jobs its all you can do at times to be able to afford your rent much less insurance
