TOWN OF WESTPORT, Wis. (AP) -- Dane County sheriff's officials say they discovered a marijuana-growing operation while investigating the death of a man at his Town of Westport home.

Sheriff's deputies obtained a search warrant for the house after they were called to investigate the death of 27-year-old Travis Khazae.

Khazae's father, Hamid, discovered his son's body after he went to check on his welfare.

Dane County Deputy Coroner Colleen Little pronounced the younger Khazae dead at the scene. A cause of death has not been determined.

A search warrant says detectives found 125 marijuana plants, three shopping bags that contained marijuana, several pieces of equipment for growing marijuana and a variety of pills, including steroids.

To all you people who have nothing better to do-Speak only of what you know! There is no cause of death-pills, alcohol, otherwise yet. If you claim to know him & say he's anything other than decent you never knew him. I hope my son can have as big a heart as he did! There's one rule you all need to remember-point 1 finger 3 more point right back at you. People who preach how good they are usually have something to hide. I flew halfway across the country to mourn that man, named my son after him and am heartsick everyday b/c I knew him & LOVE him & ALWAYS will! Get a life, heart & conscious! I hate nothing more than an authority who knows no facts, but can personally attest. Why am I waisting my time!?!

He was a drunken domestic abuser. Who severely beat his wife. She did not even care that he died. He was also pretty much bankrupt. Yeah he was an awesome person with a history of violence and drug abuse.

To all of the perfect people out there who have never screwed up: I wish I could live in the self-righteous world that you occupy. I betcha I could find at least five things that every single one of these critical people have done in their lives and publish them in the event of their deaths and make them look like dirt bags. It was very disgraceful that the media broke the story to the public before they told his family. That's how they found out; because the media and the police didn't have the respect to tell his family first. Oh, and by the way to the guy who says he was not a decent person in highschool... who was perfect when they were 17? probably you. Why then, were there 300 people at his funeral? 150 more came and left because there was no more room.

I personally knew travis for many years and know the kind of person he used to be. He was a great guy, who like most of us has made mistakes, he had a great heart and i send my condolences to his family and friends. All you monkeys on here need to show some respect for the deceased. How would you feel if someone you knew was spoken about like this after their passing? All of you are quick to write comments but slow to think about what is written. GET A JOB

Yeah, your comment said that no one was here defending him. I pointed out that on madison.com they were.

To Greg P: did you read my comment? I don't think you did.

I went to school with him, and he was not a decent person. The fact that no one is on here defending him saying he was a good person shows his character. I feel bad for his family. I don't know why the marijuana is the focus of the story. That did not kill him, it was the pills. I love how the news tries to make it to be bigger then it is. He overdosed, and I am sure alcohol was a factor. This should be a lesson you are not invincible. If you play with fire you will get burned! To Pheng Dao your comment is truly disgusting I can't believe NBC put that up. You should be ashamed of yourself. Learn our language if you are going to bash an american, at least know how to form a clear sentence.

Ah, the great social conflict in action. People mourn the loss of life, people celebrate the fact they willl not have to support him three squares and a cot for years on end, people joke about the drugs, people take offense at comments others make here, people blame the media for doing wrong or "trashing the guy"... I feel this way: if his dope growing/ smoking didn't dangerously or any other way infringe on other people's rights, hooray for him, let him grow/ smoke. as a tax payer, I am glad he's not in jail, where my $$ support him, as a father, I mourn with the family, as a son, I know the disappointment possibly inflicted on the father, overall I am sorry for the loss of life, apparently it wasn't violent at least.

I think people defending this guy should read the article on madison.com, he was charged with beating his wife false imprisonment and hit and run. He was no saint.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 9, 2008 at 12:08 PM
The media isn't trashing the dead guy. They are informating us on what happened. A find like that is huge, and important with the crack down of marijuana.

Posted by: C Location: Madison on Jul 9, 2008 at 11:11 AM
I like the picture of the life sized leaf they are showing on the home page currently :) Yes, it's to bad the guy died, I can assure you, it was not the Marijuana plants that killed him.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 9, 2008 at 11:07 AM
The media should think about his family before trashing a man who is dead. Let them mourn their son, brother, friend in peace

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 9, 2008 at 09:43 AM
