A Wisconsin soldier who spent more than ten years fighting for the American dream is now being given the chance to live that dream.
Injured veteran Chuck Isaacson and his wife Brenda are having a home built for them, from the ground up, to solute their sacrifice.
It's not just any home.
It's being built through the organization "Homes for Our Troops." Their mission is to help severely disabled vets like Isaacson start a new life, in specially adapted home that will now accommodate a wheel chair.
Staff Sergeant Charles Isaacson says, "I was in my guard unit, we were hanging out after drill. I said I don't want to be sitting here, you know when I'm 38 years old saying I wish I would have gone active duty, I wish I would have done this, so I finished college and I went and enlisted." SSG Isaacson then re-classed as a helicopter mechanic and went on to serve 7 tours in Afghanistan and 1 in Iraq. SSG Isaacson says, "We were flying in Afghanistan when we ran into a freak snow storm. My aircraft suffered malfunction and one of the engines shut off and we fell from about 400 feet and crashed. I'm one of 14 survivors, 8 people died, my whole crew died." Isaacson underwent two surgeries in Germany and one in Washington D.C.
His wife Brenda Isaacson, maiden name Mockler, says, "I didn't' know it, but he was supposed to come home in 5 days, I found that out when I got to Germany and that in itself was really hard, knowing 5 days from now you could have been home."
SSG Isaacson adds, "My right leg works, somewhat, you know, I can drive a truck with it, um, so I don't have to use hand controls, but my left one doesn't."
Now the Isaacson's are being honored for their sacrifice and given the chance, as close as possible, to get back to the life they had before the injury, in a new home, that is wheel chair accessible.
SSG Isaacson says, "All hallways are going to be 4 feet, all doorways are going to be 3 feet, there will be no stairs. I'll have an elevator taking me to the basement."
Homes for Our Troops raises money through donations and also relies on companies like Brookstone Homes and United Forums Incorporated to donate labor and materials. Frank Knipfer is with United Forums Inc. and says, "These guys are super and I appreciate it, I'll tell you that and I'm just proud to be part of this."
And once the home is finished, there is no mortgage to pay, which gives the Isaacson's a fresh start. SSG Isaacson says, "I can't wait to mow my lawn, I'm already looking at riding lawn mowers to get, a zero turn with the power deck you know! Brenda adds, "It's something I'm looking forward to, so, to just live, to be normal again. Yeah, to have a house."
Isaacson says he still has a lot of fight left in him and that if he weren't injured he'd go back in a heartbeat. Homes for Our Troops is still looking for financial donations and donations of labor and building materials and services for this project.
