Columbia County: James Gillett was arrested Monday, accused of using a webcam to masturbate in front of a 14-year-old girl.

The girl was actually a police officer in Ohio, and detectives say Gillett even went to Ohio last week, trying to meet the girl for sex.

"From reading the transactions he had every intention of having a sexual encounter with this person," says Lt. Wayne Smith of the Columbia Co. Sheriff's Department.

Detectives searched Gillett's room at a motel in Okee. They confiscated computers and hard drives.

Lt. Smith says Gillett's chat transcripts with the girl show he knew what he was doing was wrong. "He's talking about exposing himself then and says I could go to jail for a long time."

Gillett asked her repeatedly if she was a cop or if she was a part of Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator.

Lt. Smith says this case highlights the new cooperation between police agencies. "That happens more and more."

The police in Ohio gave them the video and transcripts needed to make the bust. Lt. Smith says that wouldn't have happened in years past. "If you go back 10 years or more there was a lot of territorial pride and issues that prevented other agencies from working with each other."

The internet has changed all of that. "With the advent of the internet has come a playground for predators," says Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager.

Lautenschlager says states are working better together, but that doesn't mean they don't compete to see who makes more arrests. Wisconsin had 120 arrests of alleged online predators in 2005. "We've made more arrests of internet predators the last couple of years in Wisconsin than in any other state in the union."

Detectives say they are still going through Gillett's hard drives, so more charges could be coming.
