UW Adapts Furlough Plan to Provide Flexibility
A state agency has tentatively approved a UW System plan that would give campuses flexibility in implementing a mandatory furlough order.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A state agency has tentatively approved a University of Wisconsin System plan that would give campuses flexibility in implementing a mandatory furlough order.
Gov. Jim Doyle had ordered 16 unpaid furlough days for all state workers over the next two years to help close a $6.6 billion state budget shortfall.
His plan specified the dates of four furlough days per year. But UW President Kevin Reilly said some of the days could conflict with class schedules.
So UW proposed a modified plan to give each UW school leeway to choose which furlough days would be mandatory.
UW spokesman David Giroux says the state Office of State Employment Relations tentatively approved the UW's plan Friday, pending "a few minor tweaks."
