MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Tuition will rise 5.5 percent on most University of Wisconsin System campuses but low-income students will be shielded from the impact.
Under a budget approved by the Board of Regents on Thursday, tuition will go up by $617 at UW-Madison, $359 at UW-Milwaukee and about $280 at 11 other universities.
The budget protects students from families who earn less than $60,000 by promising enough state and federal financial aid grants to cover the tuition increases.
At UW-Madison, students from families with incomes of up to $80,000 should be shielded.

UPDATED Thursday, July 9, 2009 --- 7:45 a.m.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The president of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents says a proposed tuition increase of 5.5 percent is modest given the state's budget mess.
Chuck Pruitt says the increase strikes a balance between maintaining the quality of the system's 13 four-year universities and keeping them affordable for students.
The regents meet in Madison on Thursday to consider approving increases in tuition and fees as part of a proposed $2.2 billion annual operating budget.
Student Regent Aaron Wingad says he hasn't decided how to vote and students are divided over the plan.
The UW-Eau Claire student says some are willing to pay more to avoid service cuts while others worry the increase costs make higher education unaffordable.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- University of Wisconsin System students who live in residence halls and have meal plans could be hit with fee increases averaging $335 this year.
The UW System Board of Regents is expected to approve a $2.2 billion operating budget Thursday.
It would increase average room and board rates by $284 dollars, or 5.3 percent. Mandatory fees for services and activities will go up by an average of $51, or 5.8 percent. Both increases will vary widely by campus.
The fee increases come on top of a tuition hike of 5.5 percent proposed last week, which would be less than $300 at the majority of the system's 13 four-year schools.
Barmak Nassirian of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers says the Wisconsin tuition and fee increases are at the "low end of the spectrum" nationally.
