From the Rock County Sheriff's Department:

Utilizing funds from a $25,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Safety, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office will be deploying extra patrols starting July 10. These extra patrols main goal are to stop and arrest drunken drivers. To date, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office has made 192 drunk driving arrests.

Drunken driving is a serious offense with even more grim results.

According to WisDOT:

• Alcohol-related crashes killed 234 people in Wisconsin and injured more than 4,000 in 2008.

• Approximately, 40 percent of all fatal traffic crashes in Wisconsin in 2008 were alcohol related.

• Last year, 50 percent of all fatal motorcycle crashes were alcohol-related.

Sheriff Spoden has zero tolerance when it comes to drunken driving. Drunken drivers are deadly threats not to just themselves but to everyone else on the roads,” said Sheriff Spoden. “That’s why we don’t give warnings or accept excuses when we stop drunken drivers. If you’re over the limit, you’ll be arrested.”

As a resident of Rock Co. most of my life, it is true that drunk driving is a very serious issue and that requires more police efforts. I completely agree that more patrols will help to control this problem. But Rock Co. has other extremely serious issues... i.e. teens dealing and using hard drugs. Issues such as this need to be addressed more aggressively as well, as Rock Co. has always (my entire 24 years there) seemed to target their efforts on alcohol-related issues. Again, not that these are not critical and deserve much attention. However, it is disheartening to see all of the drug abuse and crime that appear to be over looked. I hear of a new addict from my graduating class almost weekly.

Anonymous are you kidding me? Every time Dane County has extra traffic patrols everyone gets all upset and says "what about the murders? what about the rapes? why bother people who are speeding when there are pedophiles running loose?"

Dane County could learn so much from Rock County in so many ways, especially with law enforcement and sentences.
