A local company says the Virginia Tech shootings have made one of their products very desirable to colleges around the country.

Amtelco is a McFarland company.

It makes the Red Alert Warning system - which is gaining in popularity because it can send out mass messages to a variety of electronic devices.

Amtelco says it's better than a mass email system because the red alert goes to laptops, blackberries and cell phones.

Matt Everly of Amtelco says, "The red alert system is designed to cover mass-notifications and a case of an emergency or disaster or changing condition it can also be used to do daily activities such as meeting reminders and that sort of thing so it's got a really broad base of uses."

Everly says since the Virginia Tech Shootings, the company has seen a 350% increase in web traffic and has received twice as many phone calls.
