UPDATED: Wis. DNR Reminds Hunters Of CWD Holiday Hunt

UPDATED: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 -- 7:50 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State wildlife officials are reminding gun hunters they have one last chance to kill deer this season in south central Wisconsin's chronic wasting disease management zone.

The so-called Holiday Hunt will start on Dec. 24 in the zone and run through the end of the late bow season on Jan. 6. Hunters can take deer with any legal firearm, bow or crossbow. Bow hunters must wear blaze orange.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the goal of the hunt is to give hunters more opportunity and control the herd in the zone, a roughly triangular territory that extends approximately from the Illinois border northwest to Vernon and Juneau counties.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State wildlife officials say an Adams County buck has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, signaling the disease has jumped further north out of the southern Wisconsin management zone.

A bow hunter killed the deer south of Lake Arrowhead and east of Petenwell Flowage in the north-central portion of the county on Nov. 7.

Department of Natural Resources officials say the deer was killed nearly 40 miles north of the nearest CWD-positive deer and about 25 miles from Buckhorn Flats, a former captive deer farm that had been infected.

DNR officials say they plan to discuss whether to expand the management zone.
