Audit: Unusual Spending In Wisconsin Food Stamp Program

Posted Friday, February 3, 2012 --- 11:05 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A nonpartisan audit is raising suspicions about unusual out-of-state spending in Wisconsin's food stamp program.

The Legislative Audit Bureau reports Friday that a portion of recipients on the Wisconsin FoodShare program spent almost $33 million outside the state last year.

Program participants are legally allowed to purchase food anywhere in the country. But the report shows some FoodShare cards were used for purchases in Wisconsin on the same day the card's account number was manually entered for purchases in another state.

Rep. Samantha Kerman, co-chair of the Joint Audit Committee, says she's not surprised with the report. She says more background checks on recipients are needed.

The bureau is expected to release a more comprehensive report on the FoodShare program this spring.

Why should this shock anyone? The Welfare program as a whole is a joke. All it really does is support some people who are too lazy to work. And don't start with the defending of these goof's as it will fall on deaf ears. I have seen it way too many times, young people keep having kids they cant support to keep getting the funds. There should be a time limit on how long an individual can get these benefits. There should also be a maximum participant for every household. Meaning, the tax payer's will support up to 3 member's of a family. Not, we will increase what you get each and every time you are irresponsible and have yet ANOTHER child you cannot support. In addition, if the tax payer's have to submit to drug testing to WORK, why on Earth do these people not have to be tested? I bet a lot of you would also be "shocked" to see how much of these benefit's are4 spent on drugs and booze. We pay people for dumb choices in this country.

the same has to be true for illinois. The link card is used in wisconsin all the time. I know of individuals that receive benefits in Illinois but reside here and get benefits as well. There are not enough rules governing these welfare programs. Maybe Foodshare should become a federal program that is monitored by one agency instead of hundreds of smaller ones? My tax dollars hard at work.

It's a credit card!, big banks like JP Morgan get the contracts, it's big money piles now, with to many transactions to track. Same for cash stores.
