UPDATE: Man Carrying Air Gun on Carroll University Campus Released, Fined

UPDATED Wednesday, April 17, 2013 --- 11:34 a.m.

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- The man who carried an air gun on the campus of Carroll University and triggered a lockdown has been released and cited for disorderly conduct.

The college sent text alerts and emails to students to stay inside school buildings Tuesday after at least two people reported seeing a man with a gun on campus. Several Waukesha public schools in the area also kept students inside.

Waukesha Police Capt. Ron Oremus said Wednesday the man found the non-lethal weapon in the garbage and was carrying it back to his apartment when he was spotted on campus. Oremus says police believe the man had no ill intent, but the citation was issued because his actions caused "a stir."

Heavily-armed officers approached the man's apartment complex with guns drawn and arrested him.

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- Waukesha police say they've arrested a man in connection with a lockdown at Carroll University.

Students were asked to stay inside university buildings after two students reported seeing a man with a gun on campus Tuesday. Police Capt. Ron Oremus says investigators learned the man's identity and contacted him at his apartment nearby where he was arrested. Oremus says a non-lethal air gun was confiscated from the man's residence.

The university sent text alerts and emails to students and staff when public safety officers received the reports of a gunman on campus. Several public schools were also locked down in the area as a precaution.

Oremus says that in today's climate police have to take such reports seriously. He says police are looking into whether the man did anything illegal, given the gun was non-lethal.

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- A small university in southeastern Wisconsin is keeping students in its classrooms while police investigate a report of a man with a firearm.

Carroll University sent a text alert to students after the public safety office received a report of a man with a gun. University public relations director Claire Beglinger tells WITI-TV that two students called public safety officers to report a man with a "long gun" near the tennis courts on the northwest corner of the campus in Waukesha. They described him as white and about 50 to 60 years old.

Beglinger says police have brought in tracking dogs to help with the investigation.

Carroll has about 3,500 students and is located about 30 miles west of Milwaukee.
