Madison, WI. October 8, 2012 – At approximately 11:37 am, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Waunakee EMS, responded to a car vs. bicyclist crash on County Highway M near the entrance to Governor Nelson State Park in the Town of Westport.

A blue 1997 Dodge pick-up truck was traveling westbound on County Highway M and drifted to the right, out of its travel lane, onto the paved shoulder of the road. The blue pick-up truck struck a bicyclist who was also traveling westbound on the right shoulder of County Highway M.

The female operator of the bicycle, age 37 of Madison, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick-up, Timothy J. Grulke, age 21 of Waunakee, WI, was not injured. The reason Grulke’s vehicle veered out of its travel lane remains under investigation.

As senseless as this was, we can only hope Ms. Pete's death prevented an even larger tragedy. For all we know, this sleepy driver was 15 seconds away from smashing into a car full of kids. Vehicular homicide is a felony, even if the root behavior (sleeping) is not. This kid will be spending some time behind bars.

John, why are you referring to the driver as a criminal? Curious. Unless he was drinking or doing drugs, falling asleep is inattentive driving, not really criminal...certainly not his intent to kill her. Do you know something more? Tragic for both families. While each of us has certainly had a moment of inattentive driving, thankfully the end result is not what happened here. No one is perfect and no one is a perfect driver. Drive around East Towne or West Towne Malls for verification. Scary.

Timothy J Gaulke of Waunakee has rather extensive record in his short 21 years. According to Wisconsin Circuit Court Access he was convicted of 4th degree sexual assault at 15 or 16. Want to bet he has a juvenile record? At 18 he declared bankruptcy, charged with burglary, possesion of burglary tools and receiving stolen property. He was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. There are several traffic offenses including 16-19 mph over the 55 limit. He has limited financial assets at best, a bank is suing him right now, which adds to his chance of being a flight risk. Why didn't they charge him at the scene for her death to get him in jail and add additional charges later if the investigation warrants? What more of a smoking gun do the cops and DA office need?

@Mary. When you are hit by a full size pickup at highway speed a helmet won't do much good. NOT sad for the criminal Timothy other than what his future holds.

Hey Joe, There's a reason that people are expected to pay attention to the road when they are behind the wheel. The truck drifted out of it's lane, onto the shoulder and ran down the cyclist, so you say bikes don't belong on the road? You can't be serious!

People who TEXT while driving, I'm assuming this is what he was doing, should be charged and serve jail time if they kill another person. PERIOD!!!

Drivers who don't pay attention don't belong on highways either Joe!

Are people just not paying attention??? You are driving a car/truck that carries deadly consequences. If you cannot drive safely and are to distracted by your phone or radio or whatever it may be, do us all a favor and stay off the roads!!! God bless this poor woman and her family.
