Posted Sunday December 23, 2012 --- 10:09 p.m.

From the Brooklyn Fire Department:

The Brooklyn Fire and EMS Protection District is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Fire Chief Phil Mortensen. Chief Mortensen passed away this afternoon in the Village of Brooklyn after responding to an emergency call in the last 24 hours, which according to the U.S. Fire Administration is a line-of-duty death. He was 67 years young.

Chief Mortensen has been a member of Brooklyn Fire for 42 years, and Fire Chief for the past 38 years. Chief Mortensen was instrumental in getting the Brooklyn EMS service established. He was a lifetime resident of Brooklyn, and owned Mortensen Auto in the Village.

Arrangements are pending, and further details will be released in the next few days. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mortensen family, the Brooklyn Fire and EMS Protection District personnel, and all who were fortunate to have known Chief Mortensen.
