Four friends who grew up on the same street in Madison more than 80 years ago still have lunch ever week, and now they're preparing for an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Ed Kolb, George Gibert, Rob Ryan and Dave Ryan all lived on Mason St. on Madison's West side. After high school, each served in World War II. On Saturday they will join 87 other vets on a Badger Honor Flight trip to see the memorials built in their honor at the capitol.
Rob served as an infantry medic during some of the most deadly battles in the Pacific, including in the Philippines and Okinawa.
Dave worked at a hospital in Washington where some of the most severely injured soldiers were shipped home for treatment.
George was in Japan after the war ended and saw the devastation left behind.
Ed was training to become a carrier pilot when the first atomic bomb fell. That was the last he flew.
NBC 15 will accompany the vets on their trip. Tune to NBC 15 News on Sunday at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and on Thursday at 6 p.m. to see the stories from their journey.
