Press Release from the Columbus Police Department:

On Sunday, April 7, at 4:20 p.m. a Columbus Police Officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the 1300 blk. of Park Avenue regarding suspicious activity. The vehicle also had no registration plates on it. The operator ignored the officer’s legal commands to pull over and fled. Two squads from the Columbus Police Department pursued the violator throughout the city and eventually into the Town of Deansville. The pursuit ended at Deansville Rd and Hwy V. The suspect fled on foot from the vehicle, while it was still moving; which in turn, struck one of the Columbus squad cars.

Officers chased the suspect on foot a substantial distance across two cornfields. With the assistance of a police K-9, the suspect was taken into custody. Initially, the officers believed they were chasing a female. However they learned the suspect was a male dressed as a woman.

Derrell T. Burns, 21, of Madison, was taken into custody. He was jailed on a Probation Violation and felony charges of Eluding an Officer; pending formal charges from the district attorney’s office. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor.

No officers were injured and damage to the squad car was minor.

The Columbus Police Department was assisted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office & K9 Unit, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Lifestar EMS.
