Details
A 21-year old downtown resident was in his living room, watching TV, when he heard some noise coming from the back of the Bassett St. home he and five roommates share. It was about 10:50 p.m. last night, and he went to investigate. He ended up surprising two intruders who had gained entry into the house. The strangers fled as the victim and a roommate went outside to gather more information. They could see the two would-be burglars were now fleeing with several associates.

Officers responded quickly, and two suspects were detained leaving the neighborhood on foot. One, a 16-year old, had entered the home. He was wearing a bail monitoring device on his ankle, and was found to be wanted in connection with other crimes, including a burglary. The teen originally provided a fake name, but was later positively identified and taken to the Juvenile Reception Center. The second suspect, an 18-year old Sun Prairie woman, was identified as one who fled the backyard after the burglary was interrupted. An investigating officer determined the trespassers likely entered the home through an unlocked door.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been around a dozen residential burglaries in neighborhoods west of the Capitol Square and east of Park Street. In many cases, burglars have gained entry through unlocked doors. Laptop computers have frequently been taken. In this case, a backpack was recovered containing a laptop computer. It is not known yet if it was taken during a burglary or theft.

City residents are urged to make sure doors are secure, even during times when they are at home. It is also a good idea not to leave laptops and other electronic devices out in plain view. Those wanting more burglary prevention tips may wish to view a MPD YouTube video at: http://bit.ly/XTbOkS
