UPDATE: Distracted Driving Crash Kills Dairy Expo Cow

UPDATED Sunday, October 7, 2012 --- 5:53 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Madison police have cited a 26-year-old woman for inattentive driving in a crash that killed a prize-winning cow returning from the World Dairy Expo.

Police say the woman was reading a text message while driving Saturday night. She allegedly swerved into a cattle trailer in the next lane, causing the trailer to crash into a ditch and overturn.

Inside the trailer were eight prize-winning Jersey cows from the Dairy Expo valued at around $500,000.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports one cow died in the crash. The others were led safely from the overturned trailer by other Expo-goers who saw the crash and stopped to help.

Neither driver was hurt.

World Dairy Expo general manager Mark Clarke says the owner of the cow is from a state outside of Wisconsin.

Ticketed for inattentive Driving? is that all? I thought that Texting and Driving is against the Law. Throw the Book at her, because if she gets away with it this time who knows who or what she will hit next,

Lucky something worse didn't happen. I am not devaluing the cow, just saying things could have been much worse. Throw the book at her!!

We had community service,Mandatory in Colorado.Something they should have here. She could do 700 hours on a ranch and restitution to the cow"s owner.Sadly ,things in this state are not done that way.

The no-texting law only applies to writing text messages, not to reading messages.

I hope that the driver also has to pay for the cow that was killed. Come on people stop the texting and drive!
