Forgotten Murals to be Displayed at Wis State Fair

Posted Sunday, July 29, 1:39 p.m.

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) -- Giant murals depicting farm life in Wisconsin that had been forgotten for the last five decades will be on display at the Wisconsin State Fair.

Two murals from the 1948 Centennial Exposition (State Fair) have recently been conserved. They will be in the State Fair History Museum display in the Exposition Center. They depict a Wisconsin farmhouse and farmstead set in 1948.

Organizers of the 1948 exposition commissioned artists to create 14 12-by-28-foot murals to illustrate changes in the state's agricultural landscape between 1848 and 1948. They were a backdrop for exhibits and demonstrations.

Once the event closed, the murals came down and were largely forgotten until nearly 50 years later, when state fair park staff found nine of the murals in the old youth dormitory.

The fair starts Thursday.
