"Trusted employee of 31 years," said New Glarus Home executive director, Rick Colby.

That trusted employee sat in court today for allegedly stealing more than $850,000 dollars from the New Glarus Nursing Home.

"It was very hard to track her scheme that she was doing," said Colby.

55-year-old Joyce Ziehli, a secretary and bookkeeper at New Glarus Home for more than 30 years, allegedly stole the money over a ten year period from accounts she was hired to keep track of.

"Went unnoticed," said Colby.

New Glarus Home executive director Rick Colby said it wasn't until January of last year that someone finally noticed.

"We changed our accounting software at that point it was discovered," said Colby.

Another bookkeeper found discrepancies while Ziehli was on vacation.

But today in court, Ziehli's attorney Robert Duxstad claimed that &850,000 accounted for in the criminal complaint wasn't an accurate amount.

"They know that that number is not true," said Duxstad. "The amount if taken was not anywhere near the amount taken."

But when asked what the accurate amount was, both Ziehli and Duxstad refused to answer.

Colby said it's a minor loss for the home and doesn't affect those living there.

"The alleged complaint was 1.5% of our budget so very low amount for our budget," said Colby. "No resident funds were ever taken."

The criminal complaint states Ziehli stole the money to pay off credit card debt from a company she and her husband owned. The New Glarus Home's executive director said she was immediately fired and they've since enhanced segregation of duties.
