Heroin User Attacks Officer At Madison Hospital

Posted: Saturday, January 12, 2013 -- 5:42 a.m.

Information from the Monona Police Department:

A man is custody after attacking a Monona police officer in a UW Hospital emergency room on Friday.

Monona police say 19-year-old Cody R. Wiser, M/W, 9-28-1993, is a heroin user who was going through withdrawals. That's how he ended up at the UW Hospital for "medical clearance" Friday.

Once alone with an officer inside one of the patient rooms at the ER, Wiser picked up a large metal stool and swung it at the police officer's head. A one-on-one physical altercation ensued in the room while the door was closed. Wiser made three separate attempts at trying to pull the officer's gun out of his holster. Police say the officer's radio was not able to transmit out of the hospital during the struggle.

Eventually one of the ER staff heard a crash from within the room and then heard the officer yell for help. It took about six ER staff members and the officer to finally bring Wiser to the ground and then get him secured. Wiser refused to comment when asked if he was trying to kill the officer.

Wiser was transported to the Dane County Jail and charged with Burglary (felony), Theft (misdemeanor), Bail Jumping (misdemeanor), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (misdemeanor), two counts of Fraudulent Writings (felony), Disorderly Conduct (misdemeanor), Alteration of Property Identification Markings (misdemeanor), Damage to Property (misdemeanor), Attempted Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer, and Attempted Disarming of a Peace Officer.

The officer was Sergeant Ryan Losby who has had 14 years of Law Enforcement experience. Neither the officer nor Wiser needed medical attention for any injuries during the altercation. The Monona Police Department wishes to thank the UW emergency room staff and security for their much appreciated assistance.

Lilly, I'm pretty sure that a hospital room is better lit than a city street at 2am, and since the suspect was already in custody it had been determined that he was unarmed.

So here we have an addict in horrible withdrawal which makes him as unpredictable as a drunk kid. He attacks a cop and makes it very clear what his intentions were; he was going to take his gun. Somehow this officer managed to not shoot and kill the suspect. They fought for 5 minutes and he still didn't murder the guy, good job officer!
