JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- A Janesville man is charged with beating his girlfriend to death and hiding her body under the stairs at their home.

A Rock County Court official Thursday set a $200,000 cash bond for 36-year-old Michael Paul.

The Janesville Gazette reports Paul is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse.

Police on Tuesday found the body of 49-year-old Lisa Schaefer under the stairs in the couple's home. An autopsy indicated Schaefer died Saturday from blunt trauma to the head and neck.

The complaint says Paul told police he decided to hide Schaefer's body under the stairs while he figured out what to do.

Paul remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court next Thursday. Online court records do not indicate a defense attorney.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- A Janesville man is expected in court Thursday on allegations of killing his girlfriend and hiding her body under the stairs at their home.

Deputy Police Chief Dan Davis says the 36-year-old man was arrested this week on possible charges of reckless homicide and hiding a corpse. Davis says the man and the victim, 49-year-old Lisa Schaefer, had been in a relationship for about two years.

The Janesville Gazette reports an autopsy indicates Schaefer was struck multiple times by fists.

Schaefer's daughter called police Sunday night to report her mother missing. A family member gave police information from a social website and officers executed a search warrant at the home Tuesday. Police say they found Schaefer's body in the basement under the staircase. A motive has not been released.

Lisa Schaefer and her family were very close. When the 49-year-old stopped calling, they started worrying. Tuesday, police confirmed their worst fears. Schaefer was dead and her boyfriend allegedly killed her.

According to police they started investigating Schaefer's disappearance three days ago.

They spoke with Schaefer's boyfriend Michael R. Paul on the night of the 8th.

"At that particular time there was nothing suspicious," says Deputy Chief Dan Davis.

Thanks to a tip one of Schaefer's relatives received from a social networking site, they were able to go back. They discovered Schaefer's body under the basement stairs and that's when Paul confessed.

"Mr. Paul made a statement and we are confident that no other people were directly involved in the homicide itself," says Deputy Chief Dan Davis.

Paul is being held at the Rock County Jail. He will make his initial appearance tomorrow at three. He is currently charged with first degree reckless homicide and hiding a body.
