A man in the Verona area is stealing license plates so he can steal gas undetected.
The suspect has evaded police for months. They say he takes plates from parking lots and puts them on the front of his green sedan. When he drives off without paying for gas security camera footage ends up framing someone else.
He last struck Thursday. The victim did not even know her rear plate was missing until police showed up at her house.
"That particular vehicle we have recognized as being involved in more than one gas drive-off in the City of Verona," said Lt. Dave Dresser. "Actually we believe it's involved in theft of gas in other jurisdictions as well."
Kwik Trip staff tell NBC 15 the car has struck several times in the last year. Police say gas theft usually surges when prices spike, which is why they cannot explain why someone would risk arrest when gas prices are at their lowest in nearly two years.
If you see the car or have other information, contact police.
