UPDATE: Bike repair stand erected in memory of Madison bicyclist

UPDATED Monday, June 23, 2014 --- 5:15 p.m.

Friends and family gathered this past weekend to honor a Madison bicyclist.

25-year-old Chris Vogts was hit by a van and killed during a cross country bicycle trip to New Orleans last year.

A bike repair stand has been erected in his memory in the Midvale Heights Neighborhood Community Prairie Park southwest of the bike path near the bison sculptures. Money for the stand came from the neighborhood and from a memorial service that was held for Vogts last February.

On Saturday friends and family met at Budget Bicycles, where Chris used to work. They rode out to the site of the repair stand while playing music from speakers hooked up to their bikes. They met more people at the memorial site for a potluck lunch.

UPDATED: Tuesday, February 12-- 5:40 p.m.

25-year-old Chris Vogts was hit by a van and killed during a cross country bicycle trip to New Orleans.

His sister, Heather Dobbins, said he had riden 140 miles and was only about five miles from his destination when the crash happened.

"It's really hard that someone like him who was really enjoying life doesn't get to enjoy it anymore," said friend and co-worker, Hank Disch.

An avid cyclist, Vogts took his love of cycling to work as a repair mechanic at Madison's Budget Bicycle Center where he picked up the nickname, "Red."

"I think a lot of us are still deep down still expecting red to come back through the door," said Disch.

Friends and family called Vogts spontaneous and fun.

"He didn't have anything holding him back," said Dobbins.

They also said he was experienced and safe.

"If anybody could handle a bike, he could handle a bike," said Disch.

It's left loved ones wondering how this happened but knowing it was what he loved

"It's just not right, but he died doing what he loved, which I don't think you can ask for more than that," said Dobbins.

A Madison man was killed Friday on a cross-county bike ride.

Chris Vogts, 25, was bicycling from Madison to New Orleans when a van struck and killed him in Mississippi last Friday night.

"It's just not right, but, he died doing what he loved, which I don't think you can ask for more than that," said Heather Dobbins, Vogts' sister.

Dobbins says her brother left Madison on Jan. 23, heading out on a bike trip to New Orleans. He was going there to meet friends. He'd already rode about 800 miles by 9 p.m. on Friday night. That's when a van traveling the same direction down the highway hit him near Blakely, Mississippi.

"If you want to know the really sad part, the day that he died, he had biked, we figured, about 140 miles and was only five miles from his final destination when he was hit," Dobbins said. "That's probably the worst part."

The crash is under investigation. Heather said Chris was an extremely safe biker, who had traveled thousands of miles on a number of cross country bicycling trips in the U-S and overseas.

"He's amazing. Absolutely amazing," Dobbins said. "If you didn't get to meet him or get to know him at all, you missed out."
