MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Madison police say a missing Kaukauna man may have fallen into open water on Lake Monona.

Twenty-six-year-old Charles Geurts has been missing in Madison for a week. He was in town to attend a conference for work and was last seen leaving a hotel Jan. 16.

South District Capt. Joe Balles tells the Wisconsin State Journal a police dog found Geurts' scent where a man believed to be Geurts knocked on the patio door of a home about a half-hour after leaving the hotel.

Balles says the Dane County sheriff's office searched the lake but didn't find any evidence Geurts had fallen through the ice or entered open water

Police suspended their search Saturday night after nearly 50 family members and friends of Geurts spent the day distributing fliers.

UPDATED Thursday, January 17, 2013--6:30p.m.
MADISON--Police are asking for help in locating a man missing since early Wednesday morning; they're trying to locate Charles Geurts.

Geurts is a 26-year-old agronomist from the Appleton area.
He works for Agri-Partners Co-op and was in Madison for a Wisconsin crop management conference at the Alliant Energy Center.

He was staying just across the street from the energy center, at the Sheraton Hotel. Police tell us that he went out with friends from work on Tuesday evening and was last seen in the early morning hours of Wednesday. He was reported missing yesterday afternoon.

We're told the group was drinking, but we don't know if Geurts was intoxicated or not when he wandered off.

We're told that there is surveillance video that shows Geurts leaving the hotel shortly before 2:30 Wednesday morning; not through the main entrance, but through a door near the swimming pool.

Authorities have been out searching around the hotel area and along John Nolen Drive. They're also asking residents to check their property for Geurts--in case he wandered into something like a shed or garage.

We spoke with the Agri-Partners Co-op CEO as well as Geurts' supervisor. Both described him as an excellent employee and a hard worker. The CEO told us that their thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

UPDATE: Thursday, January 17, 2013 --- 1:38 p.m.

From the Madison Police Department:

A South District detective just called me regarding our search for Charles Geurts. We have done a reverse 911 call to those living in the area of his disappearance, but not everyone may have gotten the message.

We are asking residents who live along the John Nolen Dr. corridor to check their detached garages, sheds, etc., just in case Mr. Geurts may have tried to find shelter in an outbuilding.

It would also be prudent for residents living near Waunona Way to also check their property as a bike path connects the area of disappearance to Waunona Way, and it’s possible Mr. Geurts could have walked in that direction.

Police on the scene tell us they have searched Olin Park and are now moving toward the area near the Dept. of Revenue building by the Beltline.

Guerts is a Appleton resident, last seen leaving the place he was staying at approx 2:20am on 01-16-13. No foul play is suspected but there is concern for Geurts' welfare due to the cold weather.
