Milwaukee police report more use of force

Posted Monday, October 28, 2013 --- 9:07 a.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Police Department says reports of police using force doubled in the first six months of the year.

There were 538 incidents involving use of force in the first six months, compared to 225 in the first half of 2012.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the increase is mostly due to policy changes, including a broader definition of what constitutes force. Officers also must report any use of force in which a person is injured or claims injury -- even if there are no visible marks.

The department changed its policies after multiple high-profile incidents in 2012, including the death of a man in the back of a squad car.
