UPDATE: Name Released In Fatal Dane Co. Crash

Updated: Monday, January 21, 2013 -- 5:26 p.m.

Dane County officials say 53-year-old Frederick Smith from Madison was the man killed in a Monday morning crash in the Town of York.

The preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were both contributing factors in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 1:48 a.m., Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputies along with Sun Prairie Fire and EMS, and Columbus Fire and EMS, were dispatched to the northbound US Highway 151 off ramp at County Highway V, in the Town of York, for a one vehicle, roll-over crash.

The preliminary investigation indicates the 1994 Buick Regal had been northbound on USH 151. The vehicle exited at the CTH V off ramp, went off of the shoulder, down and embankment, and subsequently rolled several times. The male driver of the vehicle, 53, of Madison, was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Dane County Medical Examiner. The other occupant of the vehicle, a male, 28, also of Madison, was conveyed to the UW Hospital with minor injuries.

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts. Airbags were not deployed. Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in this crash. The crash remains under investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. The names are not being released pending notification of the families of those involved.
